2013: The Year of Noah Zark’s 1000 Free Pieces of Art Project

Shalom Life sits down with Israel-based artist Noah Zark, who spent the year offering 1,000 of his unique prints to art enthusiasts all over the world from Tel Aviv to Albuquerque to Toronto

It was 10:30pm on a Thursday night as I found myself walking home from a friend’s apartment in downtown Toronto.

It was unusually mild, for December, that is, and, had I been more preoccupied with winter’s savage plan to ruin my evening, I may have missed it entirely.

There, as I walked by the Bata Shoe Museum, standing all alone by a glass door, was a beautiful, albeit, weird, and certainly progressive piece of art printed on canvas.

I picked it up, glanced at both sides, and found the number ‘650’ drawn on the back, alongside a business card that read: Zark Bazaar. Intrigued, I went home immediately to google ‘Zark Bazaar’ and sure enough, it brought me to a blog where the number scrawled on the canvas began to make a lot more sense.

As the Zark Bazaar explained, artist Noah Zark was en route to finishing a massive year-long project, which saw him giving away 1,000 pieces of his original, mesmerizing material. I learned that he was based out of Ramat Gan, just outside the cusp of Tel Aviv, where he had resided for the past few years.

But then, how the hell did this groovy little canvas make its way to Bloor Street West in Toronto?

Further intrigued, I got in touch with the talented artist, who explained to me that his 1000 Pieces of Free Art project, while certainly influenced and based out of Israel, had gone full-on international by the time spring was rolling around. “The majority of the pieces have been in Israel but due to the help of some friends I have had pieces reach Sweden, Hungary, Poland, Norway, Austria, Ireland, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Montreal, Toronto, and quite a few in my home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico,” the artist explains to me.

That’s a lot of different time zones and cultures united together by experiencing the breadth of Noah Zark’s aesthetic prowess.

Full disclosure: Noah Zark is not his real name, though he is contemplating legally changing it.

I asked Zark what would inspire him to commit to an initiative that would keep him busy the whole year without financially compensating him. “I had been giving art away for many years but with out any rhyme or reason to it, and without my contact information for whoever found it,” says Zark.
