A four-year-old Israeli boy was killed Friday afternoon after a mortar shell was fired into Southern Israel from Gaza.

The mortar directly hit a car the boy was sitting in at a kibbutz in Sha’ar Hanegev, close to the border with Gaza, according to reports. He is the first Israeli fatality since Hamas violated (for the eleventh time) the proposed ceasefire and resumed rocket fire onto Israel, bringing the Israeli fatality count to 68 since the outset of Operation Protective Edge on July 8th.

He is also the first Israeli child to die in the war between Hamas terrorists and Israel.

Initial reports first claimed that the boy was critically wounded after the projectile directly hit the car he was in, and that he later died of his wounds.

Several other cars and buildings were also damaged in the attack.

Gaza had fired over 70 rockets and mortar shells into Israel on Friday, with sirens sounding all across central and southern Israel. In Sderot, a rocket slammed into an empty house, causing considerable damage.

A synagogue in Ashdod was also hit Friday by a rocket fired from Gaza, with three people reported injured. In response, the IDF hit 30 Gaza targets, with two killed.
