The 8th Annual Hoops Tournament took place on February 23rd in Vaughan, bringing together members of Toronto’s Jewish community to raise money for Jewish Family & Child’s Supplementary Financial Assistance Program.

In all, participants raised over $50,000 for the vulnerable members of Jewish Toronto.

These funds will go toward supplying these members with essential needs, including food, clothing, housing, transportation and other such essential services.

They also help children in poorer circumstances to have access to activities that they are otherwise unable to take part in, including recreational activities, dance lessons, sporting activities, etc.

Through these activities, the community is able to give a positive and helping hand to children living in poverty.

Twenty-two men’s and women’s teams took part in the 3-on-3 Hoops Basketball tournament, which took place at the Kimel Family Education Centre. Over 100 enthusiastic members participated, ranging in age from 18 to 64 years old.

“Hoops is a great example of community,” said a spokesman for the community-wide event. “Players, volunteers, donors and sponsors all work together to support a great cause. There are so many ways someone can get involved and this is just one indication of where younger members of our community are demonstrating their commitment to, and desire to be a part of the Jewish community. The Hoops kid’s event extends the reach to younger members of our community and from an early age instills the notion of participation and tzedakah and their importance.”

In order to participate, members of Jewish Toronto raise funds that are then donated to Jewish Family & Child Services. The top five fundraising teams were captained by Michael Taylor, Naphtali Silverman, Jonathan Vandersluis, Ryan Jenah, and Michael Soberman, who raised over $11,000 combined.

The Annual Hoops Tournament has been inspiring members of our community since 2007. Since the inaugural event, the young adult initiative has raised close to $600,000 to support essential programming, while simultaneously engaging hundreds of young adults in meaningful volunteer work.

Over the past eight years, people in the community come together to compete, volunteer their time or donate to this great cause.
