Amar’e Stoudemire Publishes First Cookbook

"Cooking with Amar’e" features the NBA star’s favorite Jewish, and non-Jewish, recipes

Everyone’s favorite Jewish New York Knicks power forward – or rather, the only Jewish New York Knicks power forward – Amar’e Stoudemire has surprisingly authored a cookbook of his favorite Jewish and non-Jewish recipes.

The 31-year-old NBA star’s interest in his recently discovered Jewish roots has affected him not only on a personal level, but on a cultural level as well, and there’s even reports of him making aliyah to Israel so he can play ball there.

Cooking with Amar’e reflects the NBA star and his self-described mostly kosher eating habits, reports Tablet. This cookbook contains no pork, lobster, shrimp, or crab dishes, though there is a recipe for pan-seared scallops. A handful of recipes call for both meat and dairy ingredients, though most could be reinterpreted for a kosher audience.

The book was co-authored with his personal chef Maxcel Hardy and Stoudemire, who is the father of four and part-owner of the Israeli basketball team Hapoel Jerusalem. Stoudemire hired Hardy five years ago, and the chef said the basketball player was eager to learn his way around the kitchen to feed his family, his friends, and his teammates.

According to Tablet, Stoudemire “loves to get in the kitchen and have fun,” says Hardy, “and he’s very serious at the same time, because he really has a passion for learning culinary and understanding all the pieces of being a chef.” Stoudemire’s beloved Shabbat dinners and holiday meals include family, close friends, and even teammates, and now they’ll all have the chance to try out new recipes that the NBA star himself has authored.

That’s certainly a Shabbat dinner I’d like to be invited to.
