An Eye for Detail: Interview with Makeup Artist Tal Peleg

Tal Peleg is taking the internet by storm, all in the blink of an eye. The extremely talented Israeli makeup artist runs Art of Makeup, a site that showcases her deft use of a makeup brush featuring artistic impressions like this:

(Hansel and Gretel)

Already a successful makeup artist during the day, Peleg’s following continues to grow with every tiny canvas, popping up in the Daily Mail and LaughingSquid.com, doing makeup design for Disney, and getting one of her image’s tweeted by one Katy Perry:

Katy Perry gave Tal Peleg a huge boost by tweeting this design.

(Cat friends gather here!)

She specializes in taking films and fairy tales and condensing them into a single, eyelid sized moment of pure imagination, like this take on The Princess and the Frog:

We had the opportunity to sit down with Peleg and talk about where she gets her ideas, how she manages to do it, and her success. As a guy who is scared whenever anything gets near my eye, Peleg’s art astounds from start to finish.

Shalom Life: How did you get into this?

Tal Peleg: I see makeup as a form of art. Ordinary, wearable makeup is nice but I’ve wanted to push the limits between art/illustration and makeup. I’ve drawn and painted for as long as I can remember but I guess I was bored with the ordinary canvases and papers, so I decided to challenge myself and turn the eyelid into my canvas.

After I finished makeup school, I studied for four years of visual communication, aka graphic design. After I finished, I had a hard time choosing my path – should I become makeup an artist or designer? Through my designs I try to combine my love and passion for art, design and makeup. I’ve tried to use makeup as something more than a tool to make girls look pretty – a way to express feelings, to tell a story…

Shalom Life: And where do you see yourself going? Any particular plans for the future?

Tal Peleg: I’m not sure what my main goal is. I guess that all I want is to create, to love what I do, and to get a worldwide recognition for it… so I guess I’m on the right path. I want to have my makeup recognized as art, so I guess that an exhibition in a respectable place will be a nice goal for the moment. The ultimate goal? Maybe to have my own cosmetics company, and to keep on creating of course.
