Justin Bieber felt the ire of social media over the weekend, after making gaffe whilst visiting The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. Evidently, after touring the museum dedicated to Holocaust victim Anne Frank on Friday, the 19-year-old pop singer wrote comments in the guest book that were deemed by many as a faux pas.

“Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber,” Bieber wrote.

In response to public outcry online, The Anne Frank House publicly defended the singer’s comments.

“The Anne Frank House was pleased to welcome Justin Bieber to the Anne Frank House last Friday. We think it is very positive that he took the time and effort to visit our museum. He was very interested in the story of Anne Frank and stayed for over an hour. We hope that his visit will inspire his fans to learn more about her life and hopefully read the diary,” the museum posted on its Facebook page.

Anne Frank is one of the most famous victims of the Nazi Holocaust. Her diary chronicled her life in hiding from June 12, 1942 until August 1, 1944. Frank died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in March 1945 from typhus at the age of 15.
