Anne Frank Poster Vandalized Near Amsterdam

A new play entitled Anne premiered in Amsterdam on Thursday, the first play to be written based on the full archive of the Frank family. It’s produced in conjunction with the Anne Frank Fonds in Basel, which is a non-profit that was founded in 1963 by Anne Frank’s father, Otto.

However, the play, while based on the family’s history, is also immersed primarily in fiction, looking at what Anne Frank’s life would have been like had she survived the Holocaust.

At age fifteen, after years of hiding, Anne Frank died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, just months before the war ended.

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands was present at the May 8 premiere. Anne is produced by Kees Abrahams and Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Robin de Levita, whose credits include working on Chicago and Les Miserables. Dutch actress Rosa da Silva portrays the protagonist.

Sadly, after only a few days running, a poster for the play was defaced over the weekend at a bus stop near Amsterdam, with words such as “Jews” and “Hitler” being painted onto it, as well as swastikas and Star of Davids. The culprits also spray painted a large swastika onto the bus stop’s garbage bin.

Franc Weerwind, the Mayor of Velsen, the municipality where the bus stop is located, spoke out against the vandalism, noting “that we are living in a society that is suffering from a lack of historical consciousness.”

“The image of the bus stop was a horrible scene that I reject resolutely,” he added. “The police started investigating and we are also looking into the matter, to track down the people who did this.”

Producers of Anne have recently engaged in a partnership with the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam, in order to depict Anne Frank’s story “in a broader Jewish context by giving the visitors a chance to get acquainted with Judaism.”

The show is playing at the Theater Amsterdam.
