Argentinians Demonstrate in Memoriam of AMIA Victims

Thousands of fans made their way to the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil yesterday to watch Argentina square off against Iran during the FIFA World Cup Tournament, 2014.

After 90 minutes of stalemate, Argentina went on to win the match off of a beautiful strike by Lionel Messi.

But for many others, the game was a somber event and one that brought back to the minds of Latin American Jews the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires, AMIA, where 85 innocent people were murdered, and hundreds others injured.

JTA reports that Argentinian justice officials have long accused Iran of being responsible for the attack.

Demonstrators, who picketed outside the stadium, as well as at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro and at the Museum of Art in San Paulo, held signs and banners which read “20 years without justice” and “A red card for lack of justice.”

The World Jewish Congress had requested to FIFA that they hold a minute of silence for those who perished in the attacks before the game began, which they declined.

Robert Lavelberg, a Jewish activist, told JTA that the demonstrations were organized to “remember that on July 18 there will be 20 years without justice.”
