Axe-Wielding Man Chases Jewish Teens in Paris

No one injured in yet another Parisian anti-Semitic attack

Two Parisian teenagers and their grandfather were chased by a man with an axe and three accomplices last week while on their way to take part in the Shavuot tradition of staying up through the night to study Hebrew texts.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident which took place in the French suburb of Romainville.

The teens, aged 14 and 15, along with their grandfather were walking to the Lilac Synagogue to attend Tikkun Leil Shavuot, a Jewish custom involving a night-long study of scripture. The three said that a tall athletic man in his 20s of an Arab appearance and wearing a long beard began to follow them while crossing the town’s Market Square.

According to BNVCA reports, the man then produced a hatchet and proceeded to chase boys before whistling to three other men who then joined the pursuit. The boys and their grandfather have filed complaints with the police, BNVCA President Sammy Ghozlan wrote.

This marks the latest incident in a series of assaults on visibly identifiable Jews across Paris, with recent reports that a whopping 75 percent of French Jews have considered emigrating as a result.

A Jewish woman with a baby was attacked in a Paris bus station last month by a man who shouted “Dirty Jewess” at her. In March, a Jewish teacher had his nose broken by a group of assailants who also drew a swastika on his chest as he was leaving a kosher restaurant. One week earlier, an Israeli man was assaulted with a stun gun near a Paris synagogue, while one week before that, another Jewish man was beaten on the Paris metro to chants of “Jew, we are going to lay into you, you have no country.”

Nearby Belgium has also recently been plagued with anti-Semitic attacks such as the shooting of four people in Brussels’ Jewish Museum last month.
