Bette Midler Brings Audiences to Tears During Oscars 'In Memoriam' Performance

The mystery of Bette Midler’s Oscar debut performance was resolved during the Academy Awards last night, as Midler took to the stage as a part of the Academy Awards’ In Memoriam segment. To honour the great talents that have passed away, Midler performed Wind Beneath My Wings” from Beaches, the 1988 film in which she covered the same song.

Midler has had two Oscar nominations in her lifetime for both her lead roles in 1979 film The Role as well as 1991 film For the Boys. However, although the talented Midler has claimed several Grammy Awards, this was her first ever performance at the Academy Awards.

It was only just a few weeks ago that the 68 year old actress and singer’s performance at the Oscars was announced, when Oscar producers Zadan and Meron released a statement saying, “We believe she will make our Oscar telecast an especially moving evening.” Well, they were completely right. Midler’s performance was a part of an emotionally heavy segment, and her performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings” was even better than her Beaches version.

Unfortunately, the In Memoriam segment that paid tribute to deceased stars of the past year, failed to mention quite a few crucial names. The late Glee star Cory Monteith and Holocaust survivor Alice Herz-Sommer (the subject of The Lady in Number Six, the Best Documentary Short) were some of the names that weren’t mentioned at all.
