Undoubtedly, it’s a happy day indeed for J.J. Abrams, Tom Cruise, Paramount Pictures, and Paramount CEO Brad Grey, amongst others. A federal judge dismissed a $1 billion (yes, that’s right) copyright infringement lawsuit against the aforementioned individuals involved in 2011’s Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol

“IT IS ORDERED AND ADJUDGED that the above-entitled case is dismissed, without prejudice, for lack of prosecution and for failure to comply with the orders of the Court,” U.S. District Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell stated in the order.

Said case was filed by Plaintiff Timothy Patrick McLanahan on January 13, 2014, claiming that Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol infringed on material from a script he’d written a decade and a half ago.

“Upon reviewing and watching the script and movie of Ghost Protocol, I immediately recognized that the scripts for this movie had been illegally written and produced from Head On’s 1998 copyright,” McLanahan stated in a lengthy federal court filing.

On June 4th, McLanahan was given an order to “show cause why this case should not be dismissed for lack of prosecution”. Clearly, the plaintiff was unable to provide sufficient evidence.
