Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ Fetches $2 Million at Auction

On Tuesday, Sotheby’s sold a working draft of Bob Dylan’s classic ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ for $2 million, which according to the auction house, is a world record for a popular music manuscript.

Sotheby’s described the draft as “the only known surviving draft of the final lyrics of this transformative rock anthem.”

The auction item, purchased by an anonymous bidder, is written in pencil on four separate sheets of letterhead from the Roger Smith Hotel in Washington D.C. It features a 24-year-old Dylan’s handwritten notes, revisions, additions, and doodles of a hat, a bird and an animal with antlers.

The lyrics including “How does it feel to be on your own”, “No direction home Like a complete unknown like a rolling stone” describe a debutante in the mid-60’s who becomes lonely and isolated when cast from the upper-class circles and society she was raised in.

A life-long Dylan fan based out of California who told Sotheby’s that he “met his hero in a non-rock context and bought directly from Dylan” sold the working draft.

The auction item was part of a Sotheby’s rock and pop music sale.
