Hot, hip, and heady, the next wave of Jewish artists and influencers has already arrived. This is Breakthrough Jew, your weekly showcase of those on the verge of discovery and ready to be a regular figure in pop culture; setting trends, redefining genres, and simply getting it done-whatever ‘it’ is. These days, it’s not enough to know what’s hot now; you need to catch someone when they’re just starting to simmer.
Featuring those in film, fashion, food, and beyond, we’ll find the story before substance is obscured by style, before hype meets backlash, and before talent and purpose gets lost in a maze of Internet chatter. See an artist in the cozy bar before they hit the amphitheater, dine at a chef’s new restaurant before the line begins, and catch a young writer’s work before the demands of ratings and longevity encroach.
Follow our lead and we’ll follow yours – send us tips or suggestions via email, comment below or tweet us @ShalomLife, as we explore the Jewish landscape for pop culture pioneers.
This week’s special edition of Breakthrough Jew features an exclusive interview with honoree, Kerin Rose Gold!
A-Morir, the luxury artisanal eyewear line created by designer Kerin Rose Gold, has become a much-publicized favorite among fashion’s biggest trendsetters. Drawing inspiration from her time spent studying classical music as a child combined with her lifelong love of rock and roll she sets herself apart with her rebellious designs executed with an impeccably refined craftsmanship.
A-Morir has been repeatedly commissioned and loved most notably by pop’s heavy hitters Rihanna, Lady GaGa, Beyonce’, Katy Perry, Grace Jones, Debbie Harry, 2NE1, and Estelle, and has already caught on with underground up and comers Lana Del Rey, Iggy Azalea, Solange, and Kreayshawn. Kerin has also been commissioned to create concert and video looks for the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, for whom she created her now iconic insect and pearl covered teacup.
A-Morir has gone from being loved by the biggest names in pop to the biggest names in fashion. A-Morir’s Spring/Summer 12 collection was recognized as a ‘New Talent’ by Vogue Italia and honored in their SS2012 showcase. Nina Garcia and Anna Dello Russo have both been spotted in A-Morir, pieces have been worn by fashion superstars Karlie Kloss, Carmen Kass, Crystal Renn, and Andre Pejic and have photographed in countless Vogue editorials. Under the direction of Nicola Formichetti Kerin created masks for a cover of Vogue Homme Japan, shot by Steven Klein, and created custom accessories for the Mugler Mens SS12 video and runway show.
Drawing inspiration from Bob Mackie costuming, New York City Vogue culture of the 80s and 90s, and outlaw motorcycle gangs the SS14 “Pixie” collection is a reflection of A-Morir’s ideals on outlaw glamour and continues to push the boundaries of both eyewear and hand crafted luxury. Lenseless half frames take the idea of “jewelry for the face” one step further and ornate masked eyewear elevate the level of extravagance A-Morir is already praised for.
A-Morir has been photographed by Mario Testino, Steven Meisel, Hedi Slimane and Ellen Von Unwerth. A-Morir has been credited in multiple editorials in print and online for Vogue Italia, Vogue Japan, Vogue China, Vogue Russia, Vogue Latin America, Vogue UK, Vogue India, Vogue Homme Japan, L’Uomo Vogue, Zink, Wad, L’Officiel, and in both national and international versions of Glamour, In Style, Nylon, GQ, People and Elle.
This week’s #BreakthroughJew, Kerin Rose Gold, chatted with Shalom Life about the inspiration behind A-Morir, working with celebrities, her Jewish heritage, and much more! Check it out on the next page!
