Hot, hip, and heady, the next wave of Jewish artists and influencers has already arrived. This is Breakthrough Jew, your weekly showcase of those on the verge of discovery and ready to be a regular figure in pop culture; setting trends, redefining genres, and simply getting it done-whatever ‘it’ is. These days, it’s not enough to know what’s hot now; you need to catch someone when they’re just starting to simmer.

Featuring those in film, fashion, food, and beyond, we’ll find the story before substance is obscured by style, before hype meets backlash, and before talent and purpose gets lost in a maze of Internet chatter. See an artist in the cozy bar before they hit the amphitheater, dine at a chef’s new restaurant before the line begins, and catch a young writer’s work before the demands of ratings and longevity encroach.

Breakthrough Cred: Creators and stars of the Amy Poehler-produced ‘Broad City’

You may not necessarily have heard of Broad City or it’s creators/stars, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, but you will in the not-too-distant future. The series “follows two friends in New York City navigating their way though the minutiae that is life”. The dynamic comedic duo created said show for the World Wide Web in 2009, which garnered a cult following, not to mention a slew of admirers (including one Amy Poehler). This past March, Comedy Central announced it would be developed said show into 10 half-hour episodes for television, with Ms. Poehler, Glazer, and Jacobson serving as executive producers.

Glazer and Jacobson attended New York University, and Maryland Institute College of Art, respectively. They met indirectly whilst studying at the famed Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre (which incidentally, Poehler co-founded) in New York.

“Abbi and I were taking classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade comedy school in 2007. We didn’t have any classes together, but we were fortunately asked to be on the same practice improv team. We auditioned for the house improv and sketch teams and were not getting on them. But you know, if you want to get better, you need to get yourself in a group and practice frequently and do shows as often as you can, and we weren’t doing that in classes. So we joined this team, and it was called Secret Promise Circle. And we were so grateful for that, this time that we got to play, without thinking, oh, let’s monetize. But then at a certain point, we both wanted to make something that would last, that we could send a link to our parents and be like, “Hey, we’re doing something,” rather than like, “This improv show I did was great!” And then it came to a certain point where we thought, ‘Hey, we could do it about us,’” Glazer explained Split Sider in March.
