Hot, hip, and heady, the next wave of Jewish artists and influencers has already arrived. This is Breakthrough Jew, your weekly showcase of those on the verge of discovery and ready to be a regular figure in pop culture; setting trends, redefining genres, and simply getting it done-whatever ‘it’ is. These days, it’s not enough to know what’s hot now; you need to catch someone when they’re just starting to simmer.

Featuring those in film, fashion, food, and beyond, we’ll find the story before substance is obscured by style, before hype meets backlash, and before talent and purpose gets lost in a maze of Internet chatter. See an artist in the cozy bar before they hit the amphitheater, dine at a chef’s new restaurant before the line begins, and catch a young writer’s work before the demands of ratings and longevity encroach.

Follow our lead and we’ll follow yours – send us tips or suggestions via email, comment below or tweet us @ShalomLife, as we explore the Jewish landscape for pop culture pioneers.

Breakthrough Cred: Founder of Louder Than Noise

There’s been much chatter as of late, that collectively as a generation Millennials are narcissistic, undisciplined, and possess an acute sense of entitlement. Well, Millennials such as Joshua Miller, certainly help to prove that perhaps the description is a generalization. After enduring a childhood that was rife with bullying at several schools, in 2010 Miller decided to create Louder Than Noise, a safe online community where young people could express themselves in artistic ways.

“It was a tough, very isolating time in my life,” Miller explained in an interview, regarding his experience with being bullied.

However, Miller persevered and by 2011 Louder Than Noise evolved from an Internet community into a real world youth-run organization with chapters in Toronto and Ottawa, respectively. Its mission is to advocate “the creative expression of the student voice through the use of various creative and artistic outlets. Members of LTN interact and participate through social media venues as well as at live events held throughout the year. Through these means of communication, Louder Than Noise strives to bring attention and support to many worthy causes, both community-based and global with a special focus on the stigma and awareness behind mental health issues such as depression and social anxiety.”

Miller has always exhibited a tendency to roll up his sleeves, so to speak, and take care of business. During his time in the ArtWest Drama program at Westmount Collegiate Institute in Thornhill, Ontario, he was a member of various clubs such as the Bulling Awareness Club, Run For The Cure, and Shave to Save, just to name a few. Not to mention the fact, that Miller also clocked in over 500 hours of community service during this period as well.

In October 2012, Miller was elected the first City Youth Councillor for Ward 44 Scarborough East in Toronto. The impetus of the City Youth Council of Toronto (CYCTO), which is a chapter of the NGO Coalition of Youth Councils, is to foster civic participation among youth in Toronto and Canada at large.

“The only way I could know that this new council was being taken seriously, and the youth and students being represented, was to run for the position myself,” he explained to the Scarborough Mirror.

Miller represents more than 20,000 youth at Toronto City Hall for the CYCTO, and believes it to be ““a more effective outlet than speaking at a rally, and hoping the people will get what you are saying.”

In 2013, Miller was named a “Top 20 Under 20” recipient by Youth in Motion. The non-profit organization creates and implements career-minded programs for Canadian young people. Their Top 20 Under 20 Award honours Canadian youth “who have demonstrated a significant level innovation, leadership and achievement, but have not yet reached the age of 20.”

Currently, Miller is in his second year at University of Toronto Scarborough, in the Honours Arts Management program.

“I dream of a day where kids’ voices are louder than the loss of their life, when people acknowledge that maybe everything isn’t alright. I dream of a day when no child cries because they wish they were someone else. I dream of a day when a kid would know just how valued they are,” Miller explained on the Louder Than Noise site.

With dreams such as this, Joshua Miller may very well save us all.
