Breakthrough Jew – Nat Wolff
Hot, hip, and heady, the next wave of Jewish artists and influencers has already arrived. This is Breakthrough Jew, your weekly showcase of those on the verge of discovery and ready to be a regular figure in pop culture; setting trends, redefining genres, and simply getting it done-whatever ‘it’ is. These days, it’s not enough to know what’s hot now; you need to catch someone when they’re just starting to simmer.

Featuring those in film, fashion, food, and beyond, we’ll find the story before substance is obscured by style, before hype meets backlash, and before talent and purpose gets lost in a maze of Internet chatter. See an artist in the cozy bar before they hit the amphitheater, dine at a chef’s new restaurant before the line begins, and catch a young writer’s work before the demands of ratings and longevity encroach.

Follow our lead and we’ll follow yours – send us tips or suggestions via email, comment below or tweet us @ShalomLife, as we explore the Jewish landscape for pop culture pioneers.

Name: Nat Wolff

Age: 19

Hometown: Los Angeles, California

Breakthrough Cred: Starred in Nickelodeon’s ‘The Naked Brothers Band’

Nat Wolff has accomplished a lot in his young life. Although he is only 19 years old, he has already been recognized internationally as an accomplished actor, singer, composer, keyboardist, and guitarist. And you might even say that performing is in his blood. He was born in Los Angeles to jazz pianist Michael Wolf and actress Polly Draper, who have both also found success throughout their careers.

Nat first became recognized back in 2001 following the September 11th attacks on New York City, where his family was then living. He ended up raising more than $46, 000 for New York City firefighters in a benefit concert that he put on outside of the family’s apartment. His family helped him out, of course, but it was still certainly quite the accomplishment for a kid who was at that time only 5 years old.

In 2003, Nat first began his acting career, taking minor roles in Off-Broadway productions, including one by his mother entitled Getting into Heaven. At the age of 9, he gained even further recognition as the star of the 2005 musical-comedy film The Naked Brother’s Band, which was also created by his mother. Nat was the star of the film, but he also contributed many of the lead vocals, instrumentation and lyrics for the film’s musical numbers. It was an instant success, earning an Audience Award for a Family Feature Film at the Hamptons International Film Festival, and soon after was bought by Nickelodeon and turned into a TV series of the same name. The series ran from 2007-2009 and also starred Nat’s younger brother, Alex. It was a huge success for Nickelodeon, perhaps in part due to the unique nature of the show, which was done in a “mockumentary” style and has been described by some critics as “Spinal Tap meets The Little Rascals.”
