Breakthrough Jew - Troye Sivan

Hot, hip, and heady, the next wave of Jewish artists and influencers has already arrived. This is Breakthrough Jew, your weekly showcase of those on the verge of discovery and ready to be a regular figure in pop culture; setting trends, redefining genres, and simply getting it done-whatever ‘it’ is. These days, it’s not enough to know what’s hot now; you need to catch someone when they’re just starting to simmer.

Featuring those in film, fashion, food, and beyond, we’ll find the story before substance is obscured by style, before hype meets backlash, and before talent and purpose gets lost in a maze of Internet chatter. See an artist in the cozy bar before they hit the amphitheater, dine at a chef’s new restaurant before the line begins, and catch a young writer’s work before the demands of ratings and longevity encroach.

Follow our lead and we’ll follow yours – send us tips or suggestions via email, comment below or tweet us @ShalomLife, as we explore the Jewish landscape for pop culture pioneers.

Name: Troye Sivan

Age: 19

Hometown: Johannesburg, South Africa

Breakthrough Cred: Cast as a young James Howlett (a.k.a Logan, a.k.a Wolverine) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Although still in his teens, Troye Sivan has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in a short period of time. Born in Johannesburg, Sivan relocating to Perth, Australia with his family when he was 2. As a boy, Sivan had both a passion and talent for singing and performing. At the age of 9, he began receiving professional singing lessons, until he hit puberty at 13. Thereafter, things began to align.

“Well, I did local things in the beginning, and then I started doing performances in Sydney and Melbourne. Then, when I was 13, I posted myself singing up on YouTube, and a manager in Los Angeles found me there. He wasn’t a music manager, but an acting manager, and he asked me if I had any acting experience. But I’d never given that any thought. Anyway, he told me he’d start submitting me for some auditions if I wanted to. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity, and the first audition that came along was for X-Men: Origins – Wolverine, which I ended up getting the part and playing young Logan in. That was my first sort of acting experience, and obviously it was a really great welcoming into the business. Since then, I’ve just kept up the auditions and now I’ve got agents that are looking out for me,” Sivan explained to Dr. Froot Loop in 2012.

Suffice to say, having a blockbuster movie like X-Men Origins: Wolverine be one’s entrée into the world of filmmaking is fairly impressive.

“It was the best first role anyone could have had! X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a big budget blockbuster film that I somehow got thrown into and it was really cool and I got to meet Hugh Jackman and spend some time with Will.i.Am and I will never forget that. My favourite part was the acting; I really enjoyed filming and making the movie. Staying in gorgeous hotels and meeting famous people is a really great bonus but the best part for me was definitely the filming process, I had such a good time,” Sivan explained to Girl.com in 2012.
