Bring on the Laughter with Jewish Folks Telling Jewish Jokes

The annual comedy event brought to you by Jewish Family & Child Services takes place this Tuesday at Koerner Hall in Toronto

It’s no secret that Jews have an affinity for laughter and comedy.

From classic shtick the likes of Groucho Marx and Mel Brooks, to the Jewish-themed jokes of Jackie Mason, to the contemporary masters like Sarah Silverman, Andy Samberg, or Jerry Seinfeld, Jews and Jokes have gone hand in hand for as long as anyone can remember.

They don’t have to be professional comedians either; I’m sure you’ll recall that your Uncle Morty’s whimsical story of having lunch at the local deli with his friends Sheldon and Irving had you roaring in laughter.

And he never even got to the punchline. It’s all about the delivery.

If you’re one to enjoy such comedy – who isn’t? – and find yourself in the Greater Toronto Area this Tuesday, May 20th, then I highly recommend you make your way over to the TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning at Koerner Hall, and regale in an evening of non-stop laughter thanks to Jewish Folks Telling Jokes.

The event is a way to celebrate the jokes that reflect our culture, and honour those that have the special gift of “telling a good story.” It will showcase family, friends, and members of Jewish Toronto who have come together to share the stories and jokes that have been making us laugh for generations.

Of course, a Jewish event of this magnitude is also brought to you with a deeper purpose, with proceeds raised throughout the event going to support Jewish Family & Child Services.

The inaugural Jewish Folks Telling Jokes in 2012 was a giant success, raising over $150,000 for JF&CS. With poverty, abuse and mental illness continuing to touch the lives of so many, JF&CS is committed to sustaining a vibrant, healthy future for all the members of our community. JF&CS offer over 30 programs and services that are designed to intervene, assist and provide care, Every Step of the Way.

Check out a video from Jewish Folks Telling Jewish Jokes at the inaugural 2012 event below, to get a glimpse of what you’re in for. The 2014 edition starts at 7:30pm, on May 20th, at the TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning, Koerner Hall at 273 Bloor Street West.
