RIM Unveils New Touch Screen BlackBerry

The BlackBerry Torch has been introduced to the public and this latest gadget is like none before, according to its makers. The Torch was revealed at a press conference in New York on Tuesday by BlackBerry and AT&T and will go on sale on August 12. It will cost $199 with a two-year contract.

Ralph de la Vega, AT&T President and CEO of Mobility and Consumer Markets, called this latest development “the best BlackBerry device ever.” The smartphone features both a slide out keyboard and a touch screen for the first time ever, as well as a webkit browser. This new web browser allows tabs, used to view multiple sites at once. The browser is designed to automatically format text for easiest reading.

The Torch’s features, described by RIM as “fresh, but familiar” include a five megapixel camera with flash. This latest BlackBerry will also have a new operating system running, which handles RSS and social media feeds, such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and MySpace. This operating system will work on other BlackBerrys as well, including the Bold 9700, Bold 9650 and Pearl 3G. It is built to compete with other smartphones that surf the web, and play music and video.

The experience of taking and viewing photos has been vastly improved for the Torch, as they can now be sorted by folder or date. Multiple pictures can be selected using the touchscreen, and moved between folders and shared with friends. When taking a photo, the camera names the image file based on where it was taken, using GPS technology. In addition, a brand new multimedia feature will allow users to wirelessly access their iTunes library over Wi-Fi and download songs and podcasts.

The BlackBerry Torch comes with a new application search as BlackBerry App World is pre-installed. Applications can now be tested before being bought, and developers can get access to multiple advertisement networks for their ads. Applications developed for earlier versions of BlackBerry will still work on the Torch.
