If you received an iPad or iPhone for the holidays, Apple may have just saved you a lot of research. Apple is preparing for the monumental milestone of 10 billion app downloads for iOS devices and has published a list on the App Store of the most downloaded apps ever. There are four categories: All-Time Top Free iPhone Apps, All-Time Top Paid iPhone Apps and the same goes for the iPad. The list contains a share of surprises, for instance Angry Birds, which is one of the most spoken-of mobile apps of all time, did not even make the podium. Imagine that?

According to iTunes, nine out of ten iPhone paid applications are games. As mentioned above, the well-known Angry Birds app did not get the first place, nor the second or third- it was ranked only in the fourth place. The king of the hill at the 1st place is actually Doodle Jump, which is considered an extremely addictive game. Surprisingly Tap Tap Revenge (a game which resembles Guitar Hero) takes 3 slot in this category. The only application which is not a game on it is AppBox Pro which offers a flashlight, a mirror and more.

Contrary to the paid list, the top free iPhone apps list had only one game in it- Paper Toss (where you aim paper balls at the bin) and had more diversity with Facebook leading the list as expected, followed by Pandora, the lovable online music streaming application. Googledominated the list with two apps Google Earth and Google Mobile. Skype also made an appearance on the free apps list. If you take a look at the list's different applications, it's interesting to see that all of them have blue or blueish icons.

The iPad free list does not differ very much with Pandora at first place, and once again two Google appearances. Yelp which offers business establishment reviews is also there, as well as a digital version of the Bible and iBooks, Apple's official book store application. Amazon's Kindle application did not make the cut.

On the paid iPad list we see once again the same pattern from the paid iPhone apps list: the users of the iPad would much rather pay for games than any other type of apps. However it still contained some utilities such as Calorie Tracker and SoundHound which offers song recognition. I found it kind of disappointing to see that iFart Mobile (whose usage is a bit obvious) also made the list.

If you know of any great apps that missed the cut, let us and our readers know.
