IDF Needs Billions from U.S.
Ehud Barak says military needs the money because of upheavals in Arab world.
The Israeli military is going to need a serious cash influx of $20 billion dollars from the U.S in light of new threats it may face thanks to the recent shakeup in the Arab world, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told the Wall Street Journal on Monday.
Although Barak says he supports the changes he hopes the popular uprisings will lead to, calling it “a movement of the Arab societies toward modernity,” he’s worried about Iran and Syria in general and the 1979 peace deal with Egypt faltering with new leadership.
"The issue of qualitative military aid for Israel becomes more essential for us, and I believe also more essential for you, It might be wise to invest another $20 billion to upgrade the security of Israel for the next generation or so....A strong, responsible Israel can become a stabilizer in such a turbulent region," Barak is quoted as saying by the WSJ.
Currently, the U.S gives the Israeli military $3 billion dollars a year , a significant chunk of the total $17 billion dollars military spending costs Israel.
Barak believes that the Egyptian peace treaty will hold for now. He spoke on the phone last month with the Mubarack’s interim replacement, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.
Barak and Tantawi fought on opposites side of the Sinai in the 1973 Yom Kippur War and Barak told Tantawi that "we have a responsibility to avoid that our young people fight again."
