Weinsteins' Bid for Miramax Fails
Disney has ended talks to sell Miramax back to the Weinstein brothers, who founded the studio.
Bob and Harvey Weinstein have failed to buy back Miramax, the production company they named after their immigrant Jewish parents, Miriam and Max.
Disney and the Weinstein brothers were negotiating a $625-million deal that would bring the Oscar-winning studio back to the founding brothers. However, the Wall Street Journal reports the deal was too complex.
Miramax has produced many Academy Award-winning films, including Shakespeare in Love and The English Patient.
According to The Guardian, the brothers left Miramax in 2005 following Disney’s refusal to release Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. They went on to create The Weinstein Company.
In February, it was reported that the Weinstein brothers might buy Miramax back after reports surfaced that Disney was looking to sell the studio. However, according to The Guradian, Disney is set to pursue other offers.
