Jaffa Road Takes its Music to Iqaluit
A ten-day festival featuring a cultural fusion of music, film and storytelling.
Jaffa RoadPic: Jaffa RoadDuring the ten-day festival that includes stops in Greenland and Igloolik, the Toronto-based, Juno-nominated band Jaffa Road will offer their blend of Jewish music.
“I travelled to the northern part of Canada on my honeymoon and fell in love with it. While there I learned of the festival and made another vow-- to return there with the band,” shared Aaron Lightstone, co-founder and band leader of Jaffa Road.
In its sixth year, the Alianait’s festival theme is “cultural fusion,” shared Heather Daley, festival founder and organizer. Thus the likes of Jaffa Road, whose music culturally infuses English, Hebrew and Spanish with jazz, rock rhythms, and classical Arabic and Indian music, is a perfect fit.
“We're thrilled to be participating in such a terrific festival," shared Lightstone. "They've programmed a wonderful lineup for the event and the band's Canada Day gig. Jaffa Road is really excited to also be travelling further north to the Rockin' Walrus Festival in Igloolik, a rare and special opportunity.”
Perhaps Iqaluit may not sound like the ideal location (to get to) for a music festival, but festival-goers will get a healthy dose of storytelling, film and music (among other activities) during the 10-day event.
Jaffa Road will kick off the summer at the TD Jazz Festival on June 27, 5 p.m. at Nathan Phillips Square, with a free event. They will also be performing at festivals throughout the summer, ending with the Ashkenaz Festival where Aviva Chernick will be leading a beautiful Selihot service on the Saturday night. Yair Dalal will also be joining the band.
