Order of Canada Appoints Alvin Segal

Segal is the President of the Board of the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.

Segal Centre Executive Director Manon Gauthier announces the appointment of Alvin Segal as Officer of the Order of Canada. Segal is president of the Board of the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.

“This appointment underlines Alvin Segal’s major contribution to the performing arts and his devotion to building intercultural bridges through the arts,” said Gauthier. “All of us at the Segal Centre -- Board members, the Segal team, volunteers and supporters -- feel a great pride at the news of this honour given to Mr. Segal."

As one of Montreal’s leading multi-disciplinary performing arts organizations, the Segal Centre for Performing Arts features five pillars: the Segal Theatre (an award-winning English-language theatre) the Academy, which educates artists and audiences CinemaSpace, a boutique screening room that showcases films from Montreal and around the world and the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre.

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada is at the height of Canada’s honour system. The Order recognizes individuals who have committed to the betterment of the community and have enriched the country.

Nahum Sonenberg was also appointed to the Order of Canada. Sonenberg, who received a PhD in biochemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, teaches at McGill University. He is known for his research on the regulation of protein synthesis.
