Barney's VersionPic: Barney's VersionThe Toronto International Film Festival rolled out fifty new titles yesterday, including 15 Galas and 35 Special Presentations. Among the list are several premieres by high-profile Jewish actors and directors and several Jewish-interest stories:
Mordecai Richler's prize-winning novel Barney's Version comes to the big screen by way of Canadian producer Robert Lantos. Paul Giamatti stars as the caustic, politically incorrect Barney Panofsky, whose story includes three wives (played by Rachelle Lefevre, Minnie Driver and Rosamund Pike), an outrageous father (Dustin Hoffman) and a charmingly dissolute best friend (Scott Speedman).
Darren Aronofsky's thriller Black Swan stars Natalie Portman as a dancer in dangeorus rivalry with a young upstart played by Mila Kunis. The film co-stars Winona Ryder.
Wealthy and powerful Jewish-American lobbyist Jack Abramoff, whose bribery schemes and fraudulent dealings landed him in jail, is the subject of Casino Jack, a Canadian film starring Kevin Spacey.
