Film Reference Library re-opens this Month
The library houses the most extensive English language collections of Canadian film-related material.
The Film Reference Library, which houses one of the world’s most extensive English language collections of Canadian film-related material, will be reopening to the public this month, on Oct. 26.
The free admission library features 65,000 film production files, 19,000 volumes, 12,000 DVD, video and laserdisc titles, as well as 6,000 soundtracks. These materials can be viewed on site at the Gary and Joanne Reamey Family Media Centre (in the BMO Study Centre).
“The Film Reference Library is a destination for the study and appreciation of film and is devoted to the preservation of Canada’s cinematic history. We’re happy to welcome the library and the Canadian Film Gallery to Toronto’s new home for film, TIFF Bell Lightbox,” said TIFF CEO and Director Piers Handling in a statement.
In 1990, the Film Reference Library assumed operations of the Ontario Film Institute. The library houses a number of personal papers and archival work. Among them are works by acclaimed directors David Cronenberg and Guy Maddin.
“Our government has always been an enthusiastic supporter of the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF Bell Lightbox is an education centre, a gathering spot for the industry, a marketplace and a major tourist attraction,” said Minister of Tourism and Culture Michael Chan, in a statement.
The Film Reference Library is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.tiff.net.
