Oscar Nominations Are In
Find out who was snubbed and who was nominated.
The Oscar nominations are in. This morning, Mo’Nique (last year’s Academy-Award winner in the Best Supporting Actress category) and the president of the Academy announced some of the nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards live on TV. While there were many predictable nominations, there were also plenty of unpredictable snubs this year.
The internet is abuzz about Jewish actors Mila Kunis (Black Swan) and The Social Network’s Andrew Garfield not being nominated for Academy Awards. Both stars received Golden Globe nods and Garfield was also nominated for a BAFTA Film Award for his supporting role in the David Fincher flick.
However, plenty of Jewish actors, directors and writers have been nominated for Oscars this year. Garfield might not have received an Oscar nod, but his co-star Jesse Eisenberg got a Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination. Natalie Portman, who stars in Black Swan alongside Kunis, also received a nomination and is considered by many to be the frontrunner for the award.
Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream) also received a nomination, as did screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network). The Coen Brothers (a.k.a. Joel and Ethan Coen) earned nods for True Grit. One of the movie’s stars, 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld (whose father is Jewish) received her first nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Another Jewish star who received an Oscar nod is this year’s Academy Awards co-host, James Franco, (for his starring role in 127 Hours). British actress Helena Bonham Carter also earned a nod for her role as Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech. You’ll have to wait until Feb. 27 to find out who wins.
