Celebrities tweeting about abortion
Celebrities voice their opinions on abortion via Twitter and ad campaigns.
It seems the recent Twitter fad is for celebrities to post their views on abortion.
Kanye West became the latest to voice his opinion with a tweet reading “An abortion can cost a ballin' nigga up to 50gs maybe a 100. Gold diggin' bitches be getting pregnant on purpose." Of course, Kanye immediately pointed out that he personally hasn’t had to deal with this problem.
Kanye’s comments created much deserved controversy, leading to a potential feud with fellow singer, Lily Allen. She responded on Twitter calling Kanye West’s abortion comment “wrong on some many levels.”
Kanye isn’t the only celebrity who has made headlines with his thoughts on abortion. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, Justin Bieber announced that he didn’t believe in abortion. When the interviewer asked him how he feels about the topic in instances involving rape, he said, “I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.”
Bieber’s “everything happens for a reason” statement drew in quite a bit of anger from fans and fellow celebrities. Truthfully, I’m not sure how he expected to get away with telling a rape victim forced into a difficult position that “everything happens for a reason”.
Bieber’s comment is being publically justified by his age and lack of experience with challenging situations, as well as his statement that he’s not really able to judge. Kanye West, on the other hand, hasn’t bothered to explain his statement any further.
House actress, Lisa Edelstein, has also been involved in the abortion brawl. She currently stars in a MoveOn.org advertisement that depicts a woman opening a closet to find one wire hanger there. Edelstein asks, “Why is the GOP trying to send women back to the back alley?”
Donald Trump has joined the public discussion by offering his political opinion. Although he was previously pro-choice, he revealed his new pro-life stance at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.
I’m not quite sure why this taboo topic has suddenly entered the Tinsel town spotlight, but it certainly has caused a stir. Let’s see if fights fly on Sunday night at the Oscars.
