Galliano's New Perfume Pulled from Canadian Stores
Being anti-Semitic and racist is terrible for one's career.
Not only was the chief fashion designer fired from Christian Dior last week for his drunken anti-Semitic and racist rants, but John Galliano’s saga continues this week with his new perfume, Parlez-moi d’Amour, being pulled from Canadian stores.
The Bay released a statement last week saying it “immediately suspended sales of Galliano products from our stores,” and Holt Renfrew said that the “fragrance has minimal presence on the floors and there are no plans to market the fragrance going forward,” reports the Globe and Mail today.
“[The stores] are taking a stand,” says Robert Passikoff, founder of New York-based Brand Keys, which tracks consumer perception of brands, told the Globe and Mail. “This is not something that retailers take lightly.”
Galliano’s first perfume since 2008 had a marketing blitz before Valentines Day with Gossip Girls Taylor Momsen’s appearing in one-minute video for it, but after all the negative media attention Galliano’s been getting, few retailers want to stock or promote the perfume.
“There’s not much to tell you at this point. Everything is in a state of flux. There were plans for the fragrance that have been put on hold with sensitivity to all the publicity,” Jan Howe, an official with Krikorian, Galliano’s perfume distribution company, told the Globe and Mail.
Other Dior products don’t seem to be affected, but those aren’t cosmetics that Galliano put his name on. Besides the perfume, the upmarket French candle company Dyptique has a candle and room spray with his name.
So far, there are no reports of any American retailers dropping Parlez-moi d’Amour.
The English translation of his scent is “Speak to me of love”. Galliano, it may be wise to listen to your own words and stop speaking to people of hate.
