Canadians Promote Israeli Artists at Toronto Gallery

You may recognize Serge Chriqui’s last name from his buzzed-about photography on display at the Art Avenue Gallery -- and also from his famous sister, Emmanuelle Chriqui (“Entourage,” “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan”). In 2005, someone who would later turn out to play a big role in his life recognized it as well.
It all started when Chriqui was driving north of Lawrence Avenue to meet up with his wife when he noticed the Art Avenue gallery.
Being an art-obsessed individual and a photographer, he decided to take a detour and check out the gallery. Upon arrival, Chriqui was greeted by a gentleman by the name of Joe Ohayon and asked him if the gallery showcased photography, to which Ohayon replied “Sometimes.”
He decided to give Ohayon his business card and asked if they could possibly work together. After glancing at the card, Ohayon asked if Chriqui’s father was named Albert.
“How would you know that?” Chriqui asked.
“Because you and I are cousins -- as a matter of fact, first cousins,” Ohayon replied.
As it turns out, their mothers shared the same father (who was married twice). The two men kept in touch for the next year and Chriqui even sought input from his new cousin for his work and exhibition in the Distillery District.
By the end of 2006, Chriqui had the opportunity to open his own gallery with a business partner, but unfortunately it closed down earlier this year due to the economic crisis. He then offered Ohayon the possibility of bringing a core group of artists from his former gallery to Art Avenue, and things kicked off from there.
A little side note: Ohayon had never displayed photography at his gallery before Chriqui came along. “Call it fate… if he had replied 'no' instead of 'sometimes,' in all likelihood I'd have been on my way and this 'meeting' may never have happened,” Chriqui admits.
They have since teamed up and are displaying artwork from three very creative Israeli artists: original art by Adriana Naveh, serigraphs by Dan Partouche and original art by Reuven Nahon.
