Columbia Pictures recently signed on to distribute a film based on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, the Oscar-winning director and writer of The Hurt Locker, have been interested in making the movie and now have support from the company to start the ball rolling on this project.

So far the film has no title but it is based on the U.S. black ops mission to capture or kill Bin Laden, which results in his death at some stage in a raid of his compound in Pakistan. Obviously, Bigelow and Boal have done some rewrites as Bin Laden’s death earlier this month inevitably lends credence to the “based on a true story” pre-text.

Production will begin later this summer and the film’s expected release date is fall 2012.

Columbia chief Amy Pascal says, “With the death of Osama Bin Laden, this film could not be more relevant.”

It is questionable whether it is relevance or timing because let’s face it they could not support a movie depicting his death if he wasn't dead. The project has been in the works since 2008 meaning plans to distribute it were being held off for a considerable amount of time (in Hollywood years).

Bigelow and Boal are excellent at what they do, but is it too soon to begin lionizing this subject? Guess we'll see how movie-goers feel about it based on ticket sales.
