For Shahar Pe’er, the Rogers Cup ended much too soon.

Ranked at No. 23 in the world heading into the tournament on Tuesday, Pe’er was ousted from Rogers Cup play in her first round matchup against Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak, who was ranked No. 150 before tournament play.

The upset came as a surprise to many, as the 24-year-old from Jerusalem was heavily favoured to win the match. However, Wozniak played strong and defeated Pe’er 6-1, 6-0, advancing to the next round in just about 43 minutes. Pe’er’s return game was below 40 per cent during the match, which was delayed until the evening due to heavy rainfall in Toronto.

“I was trying to dictate from the very first point,” the 23-year-old Wozniak told the National Post. “I think she just couldn’t find her rhythm, so I just tried to stay on her and have her under control.”

Earlier today, Pe’er thanked her fans on Twitter, despite her disappointment.

“Hi everyone, it was a bad day yesterday but there is a lot to learn from,” she posted. “Thanks a lot for all your support.”

With the victory, Wozniak, from Laval, Quebec, became the second Canadian to advance to the second round at the Rogers Cup, along with Stephanie Dubois of Blainville, Quebec. Earlier yesterday, Dubois defeated Germany’s Kathrin Wörle 7-6, 6-1.

Other first round winners in the women’s tournament included the United States’ Serena Williams, Serbia’s Ana Ivanović and Belgium’s Kim Clijsters, who was then forced to pull out with an abdominal tear.

On the men’s side, which is being played in Montreal, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer of Switzerland will all begin playing in the tournament today, picking up in the second round. The top three ranked players in the world, respectively, advanced automatically after they all received first round byes.
