Shel Silverstein “Every Thing On It” Book Review & Giveaway
When I think back on the books that had the strongest impact on my childhood, Shel Silverstein’s ‘The Giving Tree’ and ‘Where The Sidewalk Ends’ always come to mind first. His collections of poetry depicted innocence, simplicity, and honesty. Twelve years after his death, the release of ‘Every Thing On It’ introduces a new generation to these same genuine responses and positive messages.
‘Every Thing On It’, released September 20, 2011, is a collection of poems written by Shel Silverstein that hadn’t found a place in the author’s previous collections. The book features Silverstein’s classic illustrative style that is just as attractive today as 40 years previous.
Silverstein’s works have intrigued the minds and imaginations of young and old for three generations. So what is his unique appeal? Silverstein writes to real children. He doesn’t sugarcoat or condescend. He believed that children were creative and intelligent. He speaks to kids with respect. This mentality allows and encourages children to learn, grow, and think while reading his wonderful poetry.
The poems featured in ‘Every Thing On It’ are literally about everything- from garlic breath or working at a candy store to hats or even death. Although the subject matter might be somewhat silly at times, each poem creates an emotional response- most often laughter.
Shel Silverstein once said :
“Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be."
