The Dead Sea Scrolls

Until Monday, the world famous Dead Sea Scrolls could only be viewed at Israel’s National Museum. Now the museum has launched an initiative with Google to allow users internationally to view some of the scrolls from the comfort of their homes.

The Dead Seas Scrolls, written two thousand years ago and discovered in caves only decades ago, are considered by many to be the most significant archaeological find of the 20th century. It is believed that the scrolls were written (or collected) by a Jewish sect that fled Jerusalem for the desert 2,000 years ago, eventually settling at Qumran, on the banks of the Dead Sea. Hundreds of manuscripts were found, each providing researchers, scientists, and theologians with information to help shed light on the origins of the Hebrew Bible and Christianity.

Five of the most important Dead Sea Scrolls are now available online, with more to follow. Until this point, only a small circle of scholars and museum-goers were privileged to see the scrolls. This initiative was launched in hopes that people all over the world would have access to this important discovery.

The scrolls currently available are the biblical book of Isaiah, the manuscript known as the Temple Scroll, and three others. The scrolls can be seen in high-resolution, with the ability to zoom in and out, and translate the verses into English.

The original scrolls are being kept securely in the vault of a Jerusalem building constructed for the sole purpose of containing the scrolls. In order to access the building, you must have three different keys, a magnetic card, and a secret code.

The rest of the scrolls are held primarily at the Israel Museum, with some other pieces found in other institutions and private collections. Tens of thousands of fragments from 900 Dead Sea manuscripts are held by the Israel Antiquities Authority, whom have also began working with Google to put them online.

The Antiquities Authority Project is tentatively set to be complete by 2016, with the goal of having nearly all scrolls available online.
