‘Glee’ Producers Turn Gothic with ‘American Horror Story’
Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy produce new FX series, American Horror Story
Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the brilliant duo that brought us ‘Glee’, have made a complete 180 with the release of their new FX series entitled ‘American Horror Story’. Although the season premiere isn’t until Wednesday, I predict this show will be wonderfully creepy.
‘American Horror Story’ introduces us to the Harmon family on the day of their big move into a Gothic mansion in Los Angeles. From the very first moment of the episode (as I gather from the trailer), the audience is aware that ghastly things have happened in this house. Meanwhile, the Harmon family already has problems of their own; Ben (Dylan McDermott) has recently cheated on his wife, Vivien(Connie Britton). Vivien is struggling with both her husband’s adultery and a late-term miscarriage, while their teenage daughter, Violet (Taissa Farmiga) is caught up in all of the family drama.
Very few producers have attempted to create a mainstream horror television series. Sure, there are many cop and hospital dramas, or science fiction shows revolving around aliens or other paranormal, but when was the last time a classic horror story played out on the small screen? I imagine the subject matter is often avoided due to fear of lacking story, monotony, or predictability (all common failures in Hollywood horrors), but if Murphy and Falchuk can successfully pull off a show following an unlikely group of singing high school students, I think some family drama and ghostly frights might be a cinch.
In a recent review, Kelly West (of CinemaBlend.com) wrote the following about ‘American Horror Story’:
“Guided by an excellent horror score, American Horror Story is perfectly paced, drawing us into the
Harmon’s drama, while also introducing us to the creepy new life they’ve
entered into. I had reservations about the series, based on the advertising.
Creepy is cool, but for a show to keep me interested, I need a story and
there’s a lot of story in this new
show, much of which is intriguing enough to have me wanting more. Not only do I
want to see what happens next, but I’m also a little afraid to, which is exactly
why this show works as a drama and a horror.
Between the fantastic performances on the part of every cast member, and
Falchuk and Murphy’s stellar writing, particularly on the pilot episode, American Horror Story is poised to
become another must-watch FX drama series.”
‘American Horror Story’ premieres tomorrow night (Wednesday, October 5th) at 10pm EST on FX.
