Lars Von Trier facing charges over Hitler remarks
'Melancholia' director might face charges for Hitler comments at Cannes
Controversial ‘Meloncholia’ director, Lars Von Trier, was questioned by Danish police on French charges relating to remarks made at Cannes about Hitler.
Just in case you don’t remember what happened back at the Cannes Film Festival, let me quickly remind you. During a press conference, Von Trier (known for his dark humour) told reporters that he sympathized “a little bit” with Adolf Hitler. But the comments didn’t stop there.
"I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out that I was really a Nazi," he said, referring to his mother's deathbed revelation that his biological father was actually a German.
"I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things, yes absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end."
After the press conference, both the public and media were enraged which resulted in Von Trier being indefinitely banned from the prestigious film festival. The director apologized and explained that he is not “anti-Semitic or racially prejudiced in any way”, but the ban remains along with anger, especially from many Jewish organizations.
"I was today at 2:00 p.m. questioned by North Zealand police regarding a preliminary charge from the prosecutor in Grasse in France in August 2011, on a possible contravention of French law against the glorification of war crimes," von Trier said in a statement.
"As a result of this serious indictment I must infer that I do not have the capacity to express myself unambiguously. I have therefore decided that from today I will refrain from all public statements," he added.
French prosecutor, Jean-Michel Calileau, says that Von Trier has not been charged at this point, but “we are not staying with our arms crossed after what he said at the Cannes Film Festival”.
Von Trier has announced a vow of silence until all matters have been settled.
