Disappointed Filmgoer Sues ‘Drive’ Filmmakers
A woman from Michigan wants to be compensated for her disappointment with 'Drive'
If I thought that it was possible to sue every filmmaker that released a movie that didn’t live up to my standards, I’d have a villa in Tuscany, a personal jet, an in home theatre, and perhaps an assistant who’s sole purpose was to pre-screen movies to determine whether they’re worth spending the two hours watching. The point is that the majority of films that come out of Hollywood are a 6 at best, and when entering the theatre an audience member needs to expect mindless entertainment with hopes of character development or an interesting plot line.
Sarah Deming from Michigan was not able to accept her disappoint with the new Ryan Gosling film, ‘Drive’… which, in my humble opinion, is actually one of the better film’s to be churned out of L.A recently.
Deming felt the film’s trailer was misleading. She expected high action car chases a la ‘Fast and the Furious’, and was very miffed by the slow-paced crime thriller that was provided. Her solution? Sue.
In her lawsuit, Deming states that not only was the trailer misleading, but the film also contained unnecessary (and unadvertised) gratuitous violence and “defamatory dehumanizing racism directed against members of the Jewish faith, and thereby promoted criminal violence against members of the Jewish faith.”
Perhaps the film did have a few violent scenes that were difficult to watch, but the Anti-Semitic card is being pulled only to garner attention and to lay out groundwork for a legitimate case. Have you seen the film? One of the many underworld characters is Jewish… that’s all.
Deming’s lawsuit seeks a refund for her movie ticket and a halt to the production of “misleading movie trailers”. She wants to expand her individual case into a class action suit, in order to allow other moviegoers that have seen ‘Drive’ to share in the settlement.
My conclusion: If you’re so concerned about the content of a movie, read a few reviews instead of just watching a trailer. If Deming had read even one review, she would have known in advance that ‘Drive’ is not an action movie, but instead a brilliant character piece. Also- if you want to watch 2 hours of driving, go to a NASCAR race.
