The Kids Are Alright Hitting the Small Screen
Oscar-nominated 'The Kids Are Alright' will be developed into a TV series for HBO
Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated dramedy, ‘The Kids Are Alright’, is being developed into a one-hour long series for HBO. The film’s director and co-writer, Lisa Cholodenko, is set to write the pilot and executive produce.
If you didn’t have a chance to catch this flick last year, please do… but in the meantime, here’s a small summary; Annette Bening and Julianne Moore star as lesbian mothers to two teenage children (played by Josh Hutcherson and Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska). The kids seek out their sperm-donor father, Mark Ruffalo, and attempt to incorporate him into their already complicated lives.
Usually, I take great issue with films being turned into television series, but I’m actually pretty excited about this one… especially considering HBO is handling it. Will they pick up from where the film left off, recreate the film’s plot, or simply base the story on the five main characters but go in a completely different direction?
What I found most intriguing about the film was the lack of focus on the lesbian couple. It was a story about an American family that dealt with deceit, love, jealousy, pain, and growing up. I hope the TV series doesn’t focus on the LGBT aspect of the plot and just allows the characters to be true to themselves.
No information has been released regarding whether or not any of the actors from the film will reprise their roles.
A few other films from 2010 are being re-written for television including; The Lincoln Lawyer, Source Code, Anger Management, and The Transporter.
