Jerry Seinfeld's First Television Appearance

We take a look back at Seinfeld's first appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson

We sometimes forget that all famous celebrities were once unknown.

Take for example Jerry Seinfeld, the co-creator of the most successful American television sitcom of all time, "Seinfeld". Before becoming a household name Seinfeld was doing open-mic nights across the country, working on his material which would eventually land him the five minute gig below on what was considered the largest stage for a comedian at the time, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Being on The Tonight Show had another rare distinction. If Carson liked a comedian's act he would call him over to the couch to speak. This was extremely rare, and being called over on your first appearance was something that happened even less often. Freddie Prinze and Drew Carey were some of the few that were called on their first appearance.

Fortunately, Seinfeld received the honor when Carson gave him the gesture of approval after his hilarious debut in in 1981:
