People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have created 20 original U.S postage stamps depicting the faces of famous vegetarians. The collector’s items, available on Tuesday through January 2012, are out just in time the holidays- to either purchase as a gift or use when sending out cards.

“It’s just another way to be able to talk about what animals go through in slaughterhouses,” said Lisa Lange, vice president of PETA.

The collection includes world-renowned actors, comedians, musicians, authors, and historical figures including; Natalie Portman, Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, Ellen DeGeneres, Leonard da Vinci, Leo Tolstoy, Gandhi, and Johnny Appleseed.

“These are very influential people, and not everyone knows that these folks are vegetarian,” said Lange.

A PETA spokesman adds, "The whole point is to show how many cultural icons around the world have been shunning meat for centuries."

The limited edition vegetarian stamps include statements from the stars explaining why they chose to become vegetarians.

"Eating for me is how you proclaim your beliefs three times a day," said Natalie Portman.
