Neil Diamond Awarded Kennedy Center Honor
Music icon Neil Diamond among top honourees praised by Obama
Canadian pop icon, Neil Diamond, was among five high-profile honourees distinguished with a Kennedy Center Honor last night in Washington.
The prestigious awards celebrate the lifetime achievements of the nation’s foremost performance artists. Diamond was in good company: Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep, Broadway singer Barbara Cook, cellist legend Yo-Yo Ma and jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins were also recipients.
Top entertainers and politicians, including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Anne Hathaway, attended the star-studded event.
Ceremony hostess Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late John F. Kennedy, acknowledged a personal link to Diamond, quipping, “[Diamond] was a Brooklyn lad with a gift of melody who grew into a solitary man, ‘reaching out, touching me.’” Diamond’s hit “Sweet Caroline,” though written about a former wife, was titled after Kennedy.
Earlier in the day, President Barack Obama saluted the honourees from the White House.
“They have different talents, and they’ve travelled different paths. And yet they belong here together because each of tonight’s honourees has felt the need to express themselves and share that expression with the world,” he said, adding, “That’s why we dance, even if, as Michelle says, I look silly doing it.”
The full awards ceremony will be broadcasted December 27 at 9 p.m. on CBS.
