James Franco as Hugh Hefner

James Franco first gained recognition for his spot-on performance in Dean, starring as the title character, James Dean. Variety has reported he may take on the role of another Hollywood legend- Playboy’s Hugh Hefner.

Although it would just be a cameo role in the Amanda Seyfried-led Lovelace (a biopic of famous porn star, Linda Lovelace), Franco would be responsible for carrying a climactic scene in which the porn mag maven has a talk with Lovelace during a screening of one of her films at the Playboy mansion.

Casting for the role of Hefner has not yet been confirmed, but if Franco gets on board, it will mean reuniting with Howl directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.

Peter Sarsgaard has been cast as Lovelace’s husband, and Bobby Cannavale and Chris Noth will play Deep Throat investors Butchie Peraino and Anthony Romano. Other notable stars include Sharon Stone (Lovelace’s mother), Juno Temple (Lovelace’s best friend) and Wes Bentley (Lovelace’s second husband).

Lovelace began shooting in Los Angeles last week. The film has been in talks for a few years, with production having difficulty casting the lead role. Before Seyfried was confirmed, both Lindsay Lohan and Olivia Wilde were considered.
