Mark Cuban’s Best Investment Yet: Cat Drawings
Steve Gadlin and Mark Cuban want to draw a cat for you.
Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, always has an eye out for new innovative businesses to invest in. Cuban’s love for helping entrepreneurs (and making money) landed him a spot on ABC’s ‘Shark Tank’ last year. As a shark, he has invested in quite a few small businesses, most of which won’t see a return for quite some time… or ever. So who would have guessed that his most recent investment in Steve Gadlin would reap immediate benefit?
If you didn’t watch last Friday’s episode of ‘Shark Tank’, you may not know who Steve Gadlin is. He is a unique individual that works as web developer by day and artist by night. But Gadlin is not painting landscapes or sculpting abstract pieces. He draws stick figure drawings of cats.
Since the episode aired less than a week ago, Gadlin has received so many orders that he can’t keep up with demand. Before the show aired, he averaged between 10-40 orders a week. Now, Gadlin says that he has gotten over a thousand orders in just a few days.
According to TMZ, Gadlin’s site crashed within 30 seconds of his deal with Cuban going through.
Cuban invested $25,000 for 33% of Gadlin’s business. Gadlin charges $9.95 for his customized cat drawings, but his expenses are only $0.63 for materials. If you do the math, Cuban should start to see a return within a couple months if interest in the cat drawings continues to grow.
In the meantime, Gadlin has to take time off from his day job in order to fill all the orders.
“[Steve] is the master of the bizarre, which means we will be great partners. He comes up with ideas that sound crazy but make perfect business sense," Cuban told TMZ.
