Shalom Love With Stacie Ikka- Valentine's Day
Stacie Ikka on Valentine’s Day
With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching I have been inundated with requests for media appearances, written articles and phone interviews, with the same furor and frenzy as with New Year’s Eve. Again, I feel hard-pressed to deliver the water-cooler fodder as requested. While I may be the only professional in my industry who feels as I do (although I’m not entirely sure - I’ve never actually taken a survey. I only surmise this based on the plethora of Valentine’s Day propaganda littering the media, and my Inbox), I don’t believe in Valentine’s Day, per se. It’s not like I’m a Valentine’ Day hater…I’m just not a proponent of any sappy sentimental constructs, more commercially known as “Hallmark Holidays”, which include but are not limited to: New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.
If you are in a loving and healthy relationship, every day can easily be Valentine’s Day. That is certainly how my existing relationship feels. Every day, my boyfriend (Remy) shows me – through kind gestures, ongoing affection and positive attention – that I am loved, appreciated and respected. If I were single and dissing Valentine’s Day it would be easy to attribute my disdain to the fact that I was a bitter single, however, the truth is that – for the first Valentine’s Day in almost a decade - I am blissfully in love and find myself still rolling my eyes at any mention of the V-day “holiday”. I resent the pressure it puts on singles and couples alike and I know that I’m not alone in feeling that it’s quite contrived.
So, rather than offering suggestions on:
· How to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your loved one
· What to do on Valentine’s Day if you’re destitute and alone
· How to use Valentine’s Day to bring romance back to your relationship
· Romantic gift ideas for your loved
· Places to go on Valentine’s Day
Let me leave you with a few thoughts:
1) It is your choice whether you attach meaning to a day on the calendar and allow it to have power over you, your emotions, your actions and your decisions as opposed to letting reality dictate how and when you feel.
2) It is more productive to focus on what you do have rather than on what you don’t have.
3) If you don’t like your current circumstances – whatever they may be – change them.
