Oliver Stone’s Son Converts to Islam During a Trip to Iran
Sean Stone, son of famed Oscar-winning director and provocateur Oliver Stone, has converted to Islam whilst on a trip to Iran. According to Iranian news outlet, Tehran Times, the 27-year-old filmmaker became a Shia Muslim on Tuesday, and chose the name Ali.

“The conversion to Islam is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, which I was born with. It means I have accepted Mohammad and other prophets," Stone said in an interview with AFP, from Isfahan where the ceremony took place.

Oliver Stone’s father was Jewish, but he was reared Episcopalian. Presently, the director of such films as Platoon and JFK is a practicing Buddhist. Sean Stone’s mother, Elizabeth, is Christian.

This isn’t the first time Sean Stone has been to Iran. Last September, he spent a week in the country doing preliminary work for a documentary. Shortly after his return, Stone defended Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival with The Wrap.

“Iran is ruled by law. People don’t like Ahmadinejad, but that doesn’t warrant a war or an uprising,” he stated.

“He did come to America to extend a hand. And there’s a lot of mistranslation, literally, I’ve seen it. Ahmadinejad will say something and it will be mistranslated. A lot of this is bullshit, mistranslation. It’s an aggressive attitude on both parts, mostly on the American side,” he continued.

As yet, there has been no comment from Oliver Stone, regarding his son’s conversion.
