SNL Writing Whitney Houston Death Sketch for Maya Rudolph?
Is it too soon? Saturday Night Live executives are considering writing a sketch featuring Whitney Houston for this weekend’s show.
Maya Rudolph has portrayed Whitney Houston 10+ times on SNL over the past ten years. With Maya Rudolph returning for the February 18th episode, does it make sense for her to reprise the role to celebrate the passing of a legend?
Last weekend, SNL paid tribute to Houston’s death by showing a still image of the singer in a sketch with Molly Shannon from 1996.
Although an NBC source claims that SNL writers are discussing airing a sketch dealing with Houston’s death, an official spokesperson has refused to confirm or deny the rumour.
“As you know, the show never comments on potential show content," a Saturday Night Live rep told TV Line. "As Maya impersonated Whitney, it's a natural question, but one [to which] we do not have an answer."
Whitney Houston’s funeral in Newark, NJ is also being held this Saturday. Chris Christie, New Jersey Governor, has announced that all state and federal flags will fly at half-mast in honor of Houston.
I believe the subject matter is too fresh to satirize, but if the writers choose to move forward, we can only hope the sketch is tasteful and gracious.
