George Clooney and Rabbi Steve Gutow Arrested in Sudanese Protest
The actor and president of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs were arrested for disorderly crossing a police line.
The Descendents actor, George Clooney, led a protest earlier today outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington D.C to address the humanitarian crisis. After crossing a police line, the secret service arrested him, along with the actor’s father, Rabbi Steve Gutow, NAACP president Ben Jealous, and two Democratic members of Congress, Jim McGovern and Jim Moran.
The charge is considered a misdemeanor and if convicted will only face a small fine. Clooney and the others arrested were transported to the Metropolitan Police Department’s 2nd District for processing.
Shortly before the arrest, Clooney spoke out against the violence in Sudan.
He appeared in front of the Sudanese Embassy to ask “the government in Khartoum to stop killing its own innocent men women and children, stop raping them, stop starving them.”
Rabbi Steve Gutow also spoke before the arrest mentioning “the inhumane cruelty” of Sudan’s President Omar Ahmed Hassan Bashir.
“With one hand he assaults his own people while with the other he holds back those who would seek to help,” Gutow said. “I am compelled by God, by my commitment to justice, and by my humanity to speak out. President al-Bashir may have hardened his heart, but that is not an option for us or our government. Food and medicine are basic human needs, not weapons. If the government of Sudan will not hear us, the government of the United States must. See that humanitarian aid organizations are able to do what al-Bashir’s government abhors: offer a chance at life and peace for the people of the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile regions.”
Two days ago, Clooney dined at the White House with President Obama at a state dinner and testified before Congress about the crisis in Sudan.
