Russell Crowe has been rumoured to be the main contender for the lead role in Noah -- Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming film about the Biblical story -- for quite some time. And now, Paramount and New Regency have officially announced that the Oscar-winning actor will star in Aronofsky’s followup to Black Swan.

The award-winning director wrote the script with Ari Handel (who co-produced Black Swan and The Wrestler with him). It’s been reported that John Logan (Hugo, Gladiator) is also involved with the script.

According to Collider, production starts this summer in New York and Iceland with a release date set for March 2014. Noah will be Aronofsky’s sixth full-length feature. The Oscar-nominated director has an impressive track record with awards. Three actors who starred in leading roles in his films have been nominated for Academy Awards. And in 2011, Natalie Portman won an Oscar for her portrayal of a troubled dancer in Black Swan.

So it’s safe to say Crowe has a good chance of getting some awards recognition for the film. But before then, he’s starring in a number of other projects; he’s appearing in The Man with the Iron Fists (co-written by Eli Roth), Broken City (which co-stars Mark Wahlberg) and the highly-anticipated Superman reboot Man of Steel. He’s also playing Inspector Javert in the film version of Les Miserables.
