Kanye West Auditions to be “The Black Larry David” [VIDEO]

Kanye West has built a reputation on being quite the egomaniac. Putting his current (albeit critically acclaimed) album entitled ‘Yeezus’ aside, the rapper and new father to North West with Kim Kardashian has made claims of being the next Steve Jobs and is prone to public displays of self-aggrandizement. So, in 2008, when West approached ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ executive producer Larry Charles and announced “I’m the Black Larry David,” no one was really surprised, but something had to be done about it… and the result was a failed pilot hidden from the public eye until now.

West teamed up with record producer, Rick Rubin, and Charles to create a pilot for HBO. The show was being pitched as a partially improvised series in the style of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, only it would star Kanye West. The people attached to the project really believed in it, apparently test audiences even liked it, but HBO had absolutely no interest in pursuing it.

"What Kanye West said to me the first time, he said, 'I'm the black Larry David,'" Charles told ComingSoon.net in 2008.

"That's the first thing he said to me. So it's like a Kanye and Curb show, it's kind of improvised about the situations and stuff,” he continued.

In the same conversation, Charles adds that West is “so much funnier than people realize” and that the pilot was “too hardcore for HBO”, especially considering the network’s bad track record with “black shows.”

The Kanye West/Larry David project was forgotten about thereafter, but in 2010, actress Alison Quinn (who appeared in the pilot) uploaded a clip from the unaired episode to YouTube.

Somehow three years went by without anyone noticing. West’s failed pilot was available for the world to see, and absolutely no one paid attention. Now that it has been discovered however, it’s gone viral… and once you watch it, you’ll see why.

Watch the clip below. Do you think the show is funny? Would you have watched it if got a season order from HBO? Lastly, do you think it’s coincidental that the clip has gone viral at the same time that West released a new album and clothing line? Could this be a stunt for publicity?
