Arthur Weisz is being recognized for his contributions to the betterment of the housing industry and community in Ontario. The Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor was named the inaugural recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO).

Weisz will be receiving the award at a gala event tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Metro Convention Centre. He survived World War II and the Holocaust and after the war, Weisz fled to an Austrian Displaced Persons camp with his wife and young son.

He came to Canada in 1951 and found work as a labourer and salesman. Weisz’ real estate career began in 1953 when he started his own company. He found success in that business, which served as the foundation for a successful application to the government to open a banking enterprise.

Today, The Effort Trust Company is one of the largest property managers in Ontario with over 10,000 residential apartment suites.

Weisz has also been recognized by McMaster University for his contributions. The university awarded him an honorary doctorate in the spring of 2004.
